1. The moon lights up because it reflects the light from the sun.
2. The moon causes most of the Earth's ocean tide because of the force of gravity between Moon & Earth.

4. It takes approximately 27 days to go all the way around the Earth.

Field trip

Reds Hall of Fame field trip will be Monday, September 26. Students will learn about the science of baseball. While learning about the science of baseball, students will get to tour The Great American Ballpark and see the Reds Hall of Fame. We can't wait!!

September 12-16




5th graders had a busy week. Tall tales were written, memorized, and then told. We finished up our magnet centers with a car race. Each car had a magnet and each student had a magnet. The students then were "off to the races".

Force Experiments

Students made a catapult. They were given a shoebox, spoon, two rubberband, two popsicle sticks, ruler, and tape. The catapult launched a marshmallow that was to go a certain distance and hit a target.

Civilization





Students read the story "Weslandia". The main character, Wesley, is tormented by his classmates. So Wesley decides to create his own civilization. After the students see what he has accomplished, he no longer is an outcast. In the pictures the students are making their own civilization. Some of the things they had to decide on were landforms, money, government, housing, clothing, food, games for pleasure, and how to make money.

Off to the Races


Students used magnetic wands and other kinds of magnets to find attracting and repelling sides of magnets. Using their understanding of magnetic poles and problem-solving strategies students were involved in a car race.

Students worked on magnet centers all week. Some of the things they learned were: 1. Every magnet has a north and south pole. 2. Magnetism can travel through air. 3. You can temporarily magnetize magnetic metals. 4. Energy from a magnetic field travels through solids. 5. Energy of a magnetic field can travel through water.
