Digging for Coal



Students were given oatmeal raisin cookies, paper clip, and toothpick. They then had to dig for coal (raisins). After digging for the coal, students went through a simulated mine.

Frankfort/Ft. Harrod - Field trip May 5

1. Students do not have to wear uniforms. Choose appropriate wear to tour a fort.(No

open toed shoes.)

2. Pack your child’s lunch in a plastic bag. Students may bring any kind of drink.

Drinks will be put in a cooler. Place child’s name on drink and lunch. We’ll eat lunch

around 11:30.

3. We’ll board the bus at 7:45 and leave by 8:00 sharp. Be on time. Students need to

report to class so attendance can be taken. Parents can wait in the hall until everyone has

been counted.

4. Chaperones will need to park on lot behind the gym building. This lot runs parallel to

the faculty parking lot. It is behind the fenced in area and between two houses. St.

Henry owns this lot. Don’t park on the front lot, as students will be playing there after

lunch.

5. We will arrive back at St. Henry at approximately 5:00. Please make arrangements to

have your child picked up by then.

6. Students may have the opportunity to visit a gift shop if their chaperone takes them.

There is a gift shop at Ft. Harrod only.

7. No electronic devices – If students would like to bring a camera, that is fine as long as

they keep it and are responsible for it.

8. There is a bathroom on the bus and TVs. Students will be able to watch a movie. It

will be one that is suitable for their age. The ride is approximately two hours to

Harrodsburg.

9. We will expect appropriate behavior on the bus. No yelling or screaming will be

tolerated.

10. A picture of the group will be taken at the capitol. It is free.

11. Students do not need to bring their backpacks to school that day.

12. All adults must carry a photo ID. It may be needed at the Capitol.

13. Chaperones are to make sure that students, you are responsible for, are with you at all

times.

14. We will arrive in Harrodsburg at approximately 9:45-10:00. Student may eat a non-

messy snack on the bus. All garbage must be placed in a provided garbage bag on bus.

15. Students may want to bring an extra drink for the ride home along with a snack.

NEWSQUIZ

For the second time this year students' writing has been on a weekly KET show called Newsquiz. Each week students have a topic to write about and then they e-mail it to the show. Kate Minzner, writing about Abraham Lincoln, was on in November and today Gina Kemp's writing on poetry was on the KET show. Click below to view the show. Detectives ?



After reading an Encyclopedia Brown story, students became detectives. Did Humpty Dumpty fall off the wall or did he get pushed? Did Jack and Jill fall down the hill or did they get tripped? Did Old Mother Hobbard get robbed? These are just some of the questions students had to answer. Their answers included a problem, rising action, climax, and a solution.

Chicks



4-H teacher, Mrs.Rice, taught the students about chick eggs. On April 12 an incubator of eggs will arrive at St. Henry. Students will keep a watchful egg out for these eggs. When they hatch, students will feed and nurture them until they are sent to a farm.
