POETRY SLAM

It's coming to St. Henry fourth graders. A poetry slam is an event in which poets(fourth graders) perform their work and are judged by members of an audience.

Our classroom will be transformed into a 1980's coffehouse (gained fame in Chicago in the the 1980's) Students will eat cookies and drink hot chocolate while poetry is being performed by fellow classmates. Days before the event students will decorate tablecloths with slogans and various forms of graffiti.

Some guidelines for the event are:

  • Students should clearly articulate their words.
  • Students should make appropriate use of gestures to convey the message or feeling of their poems.
  • Each student should completely memorize their poem.
  • No props, costumes, or musical instruments of any kind would be allowed; this should be poetry in its purest form.
Songs from the 1980's will be played.

The mystery word for January 4th is poetry slam.
